X-BAND RADAR TARGET  SIMULATOR

The X-band Radar Target Simulator performs range delays and Doppler shifts on received RF radar carriers and retransmits them over the fre- quency band between 9.3 to 9.5 GHz (configurable).
The Radar Target Simulator is designed for calibrating and testing of radar systems. It is able to generate a calibrated range delayed and Doppler shifted virtual target. The versatile instrument can be quickly adapted to almost any specific requirement. It comes by default with a comprehensive pulse analysis software that logs indi- vidual radar pulses and determines their properties like the shape, frequency and distance to the next pulse.

Functional description


Operating mode set up parameters like carrier fre- quency, range delay and Doppler velocity are se- lected over a graphical user interface. The user can select if IQ data of the received pulses should be stored for further analysis.
When an RF radar carrier is received, it is down- converted over an IF frequency to DC. The signal   is retransmitted with a precisely defined time offset. The frequency offset is added to the carrier by digi- tally multiplying the received IQ signal with a complex sinusoidal. The amplitude of the RF carrier is also modulated in order to simulate a radar target that cor- responds exactly to a predefined radar cross section. This modified digital signal is then up-converted over three stages, amplified and sent back over the same horn antenna to the radar.

Pulse analysis


Individual radar pulses can be stored, either sam- ple by sample IQ data for short measurement peri- ods or just with characteristic information like pulse width, mean amplitude, frequency and time of ar- rival for long measurement periods. Pulses are time- stamped with a GPS referenced clock.
